Welcome! A global workspace for bjb and friends...

This site contains all my articles that are available for download, focused on the issue of consciousness and the brain, in humans, animals, and speculatively, in other forms. Soon it will have a copy of my 1988 book, A Cognitive Theory of Consciousness (published by Cambridge, but now in the Google book domain). This book is widely cited (and perhaps not widely read) as a source on Global Workspace Theory, a way to make sense of the evidence regarding human consciousness. It is still the most complete statement of the conceptual theory. For recent brain and psychological evidence, please look for more recent articles on this site.

I hope to use this wiki site for discussions, seminars, web links, and references, as well. It will link to Science & Consciousness Review, which maintains a flow of readable articles on consciousness (www.sci-con.org), and to Stan Franklin's LIDA site (which includes a model of Global Workspace Theory (GWT)). Stan's cite has excellent tutorials on LIDA.

The brain basis of consciousness is now a lively frontier question. (See SCIENCE, date) GWT suggests some ideas for that search. Professors Stan Dehaene and Murray Shanahan, and their coworkers, have pursued a "neuronal global workspace theory" in their own ways. Jim Newman, before his tragic death, made important contributions. A number of others have provided ideas, questions, and challenges.

Parallel efforts are coming from a number of researchers. I will try to keep a list of links and references, to allow you to understand their work.

This site will also provide an opportunity for you to participate.
