Consciousness: The WebCourse. Fall, 2007. Bernard Baars & Katie A. McGovern
Consciousness: The Webcourse will focus on evidence and theory about our conscious experience embracing all three classical approaches: Personal, Intersubjective, and Scientific.
Each week will have a lecture, in print and audio. In experiential Phenomenology Labs, we will explore personal experiences of dreams, perceptual illusions, feelings of knowing, emotional highs and lows, the fleeting present and unconscious influences. We will also look at the second person perspective, what it means for an “I” to encounter a “Thou.” Finally, we will explore recent brain studies of higher states of consciousness.
All materials will be available online. Textbook purchases are encouraged (about 20 dollars). Small group discussions (wikis) will be webcast on Saturdays and Sundays, then archived.
See full syllabus and registration details at www.consciousness.arizona.edu.
Sponsored by the University of Arizona Center for Consciousness Studies.
Soon we will have a downloadable copy of my 1988 book, A Cognitive Theory of Consciousness (published by Cambridge University Press, but soon to be in the Google book domain). This book is widely cited as the source of Global Workspace Theory, a framework for scientific evidence about human consciousness. It is still the most complete statement of the theory.
A popular account is given in: In the Theater of Consciousness, the Workspace of the Mind
I hope to use this wiki site for discussions, seminars, web links, and references, as well.
